11 Etsy SEO Strategies To Increase Your Shop Traffic and Sales

11 Etsy SEO Strategies To Increase Your Shop Traffic and Sales | MamaBleu.com

Etsy SEO. Whether you want to become an Etsy best seller or just reach a sales goal each month, learning and using SEO strategies is the ticket to helping you increase traffic to your Etsy shop and generate more sales.

Search Engine Optimization is the power tool of the internet that helps people find your products. When you optimize your shop listings you are helping Etsy find your products and show them to the right customers who are ready to buy.

I know that SEO can be a bit overwhelming to wrap your head around but the basics of it are pretty simple and there are strategic action steps that you can take to optimize your Etsy shop.

The definition of optimize is to make as perfect, effective, or functional as possible and that’s what we are going to explore today so your Etsy shop will be set up for success!

Because your potential customers don’t have the advantage of walking into a brick and mortar shop to see your items, your job is to use specific descriptive words and photos in your shop listings to help them understand what you have to offer and how it will benefit them.

Stay away from using words that are specific to your industry and rarely used or understood by your customers.

Put yourself in your customer’s shoes and imagine what they would type into the search box when they come to Etsy to shop. Write down those words and phrases and do the work of typing them in for yourself.

Take note of what happens. Does your item look like a good fit for that search result list? Also, what words or phrases auto populate in the list? Make a list of ideas you get for your own items.

Always be mindful of how your customer thinks when describing your items and crafting your Titles and Tags.

Titles are an important part of your listing and play a big role when it comes to SEO. A strong title includes the right keywords to draw in your ideal customer.

Tags are a reflection of the words in your title and help improve the SEO of each listing.

Part of your action place is to develop a strategy for identifying strong keywords for both your titles and tags.

Using some of the words and phrases you just took note on is just the beginning.

First let’s cover what a keyword or keyword phrase is. This is a word, or 2-3 word phrase, that customers type in the Etsy search box to find what they are looking for.

And yes, there is a strategy for finding great keywords and tools to help you search for the best to use in your Etsy shop.

~ Etsy

This is one of my go-to methods of finding keywords.

As you type into the Etsy search box, words will auto populate in a drop down menu. These are currently the most popular search terms (related to what you are typing).

Although these keywords and phrases may change over the course of the year, they can be a helpful way of knowing what it trending and what people are currently looking for.

It is best to use a combination of methods to find keywords and keyword phrases instead of putting all your eggs in one basket and relying solely on one resource.

~ Marmelead

If you are looking for a word search site that caters exclusively to Etsy shop owners, this is the site for you. Along with Etsy search, Marmelead is my preferred search tool.

Although there is a monthly fee, you can try it out for free by clicking the Dabbler button.

The site is user friendly and color coded to easily identify the best keywords to use. I also appreciate the video trainings which walk you step-by-step through their tools.

~ Pinterest

We commonly refer to Pinterest as a social media site, but in reality, it is a search engine site.

It’s not just a place to find ideas for planning your wedding or decorating your home. It’s a great keyword resource.

Start typing in a word and some trending words/phrases will populate in a drop down menu.

According to Shopify 93% of Pinterest users use the platform to plan purchases. This brings up another topic about using Pinterest for promoting your products, but the fact is, shoppers are using this site to search for items to purchase and Pinterest is collecting those search terms. It’s not your run-of-the-mile keyword search tool but it’s a great resource just the same.

~ Google Keyword Planner

A keyword research tool that allows you to find the right keywords to target your audience. During the process of using this tool you will be asked to create an online ad campaign but it’s not a requirement.
Identifying keywords here are pulled from across the web and not narrowly specific to Etsy.

A single keyword such as  “kids” for example, is an extremely broad term and this particular word brings up over 4M listings on Etsy. Lots a competition!

A keyword phrase like “kids wood toys” is more specific and narrows the search down significantly and reduces the competition to around 11K listings.

As I mentioned above, keyword phrases are more effective search terms than single keywords, but not all keyword phrases are created alike.

Some keyword phrases are more BROAD and others are more TARGETED. In crafting good Title for your Etsy item it is best to have a blend of both.

So what’s the difference?

Broad keyword phrases are more general:
  • Kids Toys
  • Womens Purse
  • Home Decor
  • Coffee Mug
  • Silver Bracelet
Targeted keyword phrase are more specific:
  • Kids Wood Toys
  • Womens Wedding Purse
  • Modern Floral Home Decor
  • Inspirational Coffee Mug
  • Personalized Silver Bracelet

Etsy puts the most value on the first 40 characters of your shop item Titles so this is where you want to place your most important keyword phrases.

The placement order of these phrases within those 40 characters is something you will need to experiment with.

Jody and Karl at BlackbirdSupply on Etsy are masters at crafting strong titles for their shop items. Take a look below at 2 different listings they have for the same women’s t-shirt.

Little Dipper Womens Tshirt, Clothing Gift, Constellation Shirt, Ursa Minor Galaxy T Shirt, Blackbirdtees, Womens Top, Womens Graphic Tee

Constellation Shirt, Womens Graphic Tee, Little Dipper Tshirt, Clothing Gift for Her, Womens Tshirt, Galaxy Astronomy Shirt, Indigo Blue

They’ve taken their broad and targeted keyword phrases and woven them together to create titles that rank them high in these search categories.

One of the most important steps you can take to improve the ranking of your listings is to match your title with your tags.

There will be times that you’ll need to break apart your phrases because each tag is limited to 20 character, but you can work around that.

An example would be “Clothing Gift for Her”. You can break that into 2 tags - clothing gift and gift for her.

Etsy’s search engine is looking for the best possible match for a customer’s search request, so shops that have matching words in both areas will help Etsy find your products and show them to customers who are ready to buy.

Placing your keywords and phrases in a particular order for your Titles WILL make a difference in your ranking BUT the order of your tags does not matter.

All the work you do on your titles and tags is for your relevancy on Etsy - relevant to what people are searching for.

Recency is a totally different matter. This basically means how recently your item was newly listed or renewed.

The fact is…..Etsy likes to see activity in your shop and it will definitely influence your ranking.

Some recency activities include:
  • Adding new items
  • Making sales that automatically renew a listing
  • Renewing existing listings
Automatic renewals happen:
  • After you make a sale on a listed item that is not sold out
  • If you click the automatic option on your listing so it will renew, rather than expire, after 4 months
  • When you use websites like EtsyOnSale to set up auto renews for dates less than 4 months out
When adding new items or renewing items manually or automatically, be sure to do it during peak shopping times. This will maximize the benefits of your actions.

Whether you decide to capitalize each of the words in your shop titles or not is completely up to you. This one little thing will not influence the relevancy or the recency of your items but it may influence the sale of your items.

If you look at any E-commerce website you will notice that they all capitalize the first letter of the primary words in their product listing titles.

According to VerticalRail, this is a good rule to follow for creating good Amazon product listing titles. I say…..if it’s good for Amazon it’s good for my Etsy shop!!

All rules aside, I believe using this practice is much more professional looking and it’s easier for your customers to read. Plain and simple!

There are a variety of ways to separate the keyword phrases in your shop titles so they don’t look like a run-on sentence.

Whatever punctuation mark you decide to use - comma, period, dash, slash mark, line - doesn’t matter. Using separators in your title simply helps with readability for your customers. Pick one style and stick with that for all of your listings.

Once you put these strategies into place you will begin to see results at different rates. Some will happen almost immediately and others will take time and may need to be adjusted as you learn what is working and what needs to be tweaked.

A personal note here that I learned the hard way. As I mentioned, Etsy really likes to see activity in our shop. If you set it up and leave it, and think that’s all you need to do then you will be sadly disappointed in the performance of your shop.

I’m not saying you need to be changing things daily but I suggest that you are actively involved in your business.

Get acquainted with some of the tools that can help you track the performance of your shop listings.

The back end of your shop shows stats in a variety of areas that you can use to determine:
  • Which listings are performing well
  • Peak activity times
  • High performing keyword phrases

If you haven’t done so already, be sure to download the Sell On Etsy App on your phone. Your sales are definitely going to increase and you’ll want to hear every cha-ching so you can do a happy dance!!

Does anything about these strategies shock you? What do you have the most trouble with when it comes to putting SEO action steps in place?
